  1. The Compose Utility is a Windows 3 program that helps users enter 
  2. the characters and symbols that do not appear on the keyboard.
  3.  
  4. The Compose Utility installs a Windows keyboard filter.  While it is 
  5. running, users can type a compose key, followed by a two character 
  6. mnemonic.  The Compose Utility will then replace the two characters by 
  7. the required Windows character.
  8.  
  9. The Compose Utility runs in the background and works with any 
  10. application.  By default the right control key is the compose key.
  11.  
  12. With The Compose Utility, entering special characters is not only easy, it 
  13. is addictive!  Here are some examples;

  15. <Compose> < <    generates  ½ The french open quote
  16. <Compose> a e    generates  µ The a e ligature
  17. <Compose> y =    generates  Ñ The Yen sign
  18. <Compose> E '    generates  ╔ Uppercase E acute accent
  19. <Compose> c o    generates  ⌐ The copyright sign
  20. <Compose> 1 4    generates  ╝ A one quarter fraction
  21. <Compose>  : -    generates  ≈ The division sign

  23. You will only see the correct characters if you view this file with a 
  24. Windows application, such as Notepad.

  26. The sequences are very easy to remember.  Non-keyboard characters 
  27. can now be typed in effortlessly, without having to search for an ANSI 
  28. character table.

  30. Compose sequences are defined for all the ANSI characters, including the 
  31. extended characters in many new fonts. If you do not like them, you can 
  32. change them or add alternatives.

  34. The Compose Utility also allows characters from special character sets, 
  35. such as Symbol or Dingbats to be entered by clicking on a button matrix.

  37. There is an install program, but before using it, read the documentation.
